Generator Gas & Propane Hookup: North Shore quotes
A standby generator needs a dedicated fuel supply: either a natural gas line from your meter or a propane tank sized to run it through a long outage. That work requires a licensed gas fitter and a gas permit in Massachusetts. We connect you with independent local professionals who can quote it.

What the job involves
- Check the supply. The gas fitter totals up every gas appliance plus the generator to see if the meter and piping can handle it. The gas utility may need to upgrade the meter.
- Propane option. Without gas service, a propane supplier sets a tank that meets placement rules, and the fitter pipes it to the generator.
- Permit and piping. A licensed gas fitter files the gas permit and runs the line with a shutoff at the generator.
- Pressure test and inspection. The piping is pressure tested and inspected before the generator is started.
Why generator safety matters
Backup power is about comfort, but how you get it is a safety decision.
Portable generators kill people every year
CPSC estimates about 85 U.S. consumers die each year from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by gasoline-powered portable generators, and 81% of those deaths happen at homes.(CPSC: Generator safety and carbon monoxide deaths)
Distance is not optional
CPSC says to run a portable generator only outdoors, at least 20 feet from the house, with the exhaust pointed away, and to have working CO alarms.(CPSC: Generator safety and carbon monoxide deaths)
Backfeeding can electrocute line workers
Plugging a generator into a wall outlet sends power back onto utility lines. CPSC warns this can electrocute utility workers and neighbors.(CPSC: Portable generator safety alert (PDF))
Use a transfer switch
OSHA says a generator should only be connected to a building's wiring through a transfer switch installed by a qualified electrician.(OSHA: Using portable generators safely (PDF), Ready.gov: Power outages (including generator safety))
Is this the right fit?
- You are adding a standby generator and need a fuel line run to it
- Your gas meter may be too small for the generator plus your furnace and water heater
- You do not have natural gas and need a propane tank
- You want enough fuel on hand for a multi-day outage
- An installer said your existing gas piping is undersized

Generator questions
Natural gas or propane?
Natural gas is delivered continuously, so you do not run out. Propane is stored on site, so runtime depends on tank size and how hard the generator works. Your installer can estimate runtime for your load.
Who can do generator gas piping in Massachusetts?
Gas fitting must be done by a licensed plumber or gas fitter with a permit. You can look up a license through the Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters.
Does the gas company need to be involved?
Often. If the generator raises your total gas load, the utility may need to approve or upgrade the meter. Your installer usually coordinates this.
How far from the house should a portable generator be?
CPSC says at least 20 feet, outdoors only, with the exhaust pointed away from the home, and never in a garage or basement, even with the door open.
Is it legal to backfeed through a dryer outlet?
It is unsafe and violates electrical code. CPSC warns backfeeding can electrocute utility workers and neighbors. Use a transfer switch or interlock installed by a licensed electrician.
